Great Thanksgiving Foods for Teeth & Gums

A favorite holiday of many Americans, Thanksgiving offers an opportunity to gather with loved ones and think about all that you are grateful for. However, the feast on the fourth Thursday in November is infamous for putting a damper on many “healthy eating” goals. But even if you are trying to promote a healthy mouth and a healthy body, you can still indulge in some of your favorite holiday dishes. Other popular appetizers that contain tooth-strengthening vitamins and minerals include nuts, fresh whole fruit, and crunchy veggies. Cheese, almonds, and walnuts contain calcium and phosphorus, with strengthen your teeth. Apple slices, carrots, and celery, in addition to their healthy nutrients, actually help to clean your teeth due to their water and fiber content.

  4. Turkey contains B vitamins that fight off oral inflammation and mouth sores, so help yourself to a serving this Thanksgiving. Just don’t forget to floss afterward, as pieces of the meat can get stuck between your teeth.

  6. Sweet potatoes are a fall favorite and often end up on the Thanksgiving table. Soft and easy to chew, these root veggies contain vitamin A, which allows for a healthy flow of saliva to protect your teeth and gums. But opt for sweet potatoes prepared without added sugar instead of those that are candied or topped with marshmallows.

  8. If you want to splurge on dessert, stick with a classic pumpkin pie. Like sweet potatoes, pumpkins are packed with powerful vitamin A that will help keep your mouth moist. It also contains vitamin C, which is essential for the formation of collagen in connective tissue, which anchors your teeth into your gums and keeps your gums strong.
